Nemati is the first Iranian athlete, the first Asian woman and 13rd athlete in the history of Sport who has gained 2 simultaneous Olympic and Paralympic quotas. She is the first disabled Muslim woman who carried the Flag for Team Iran in Olympic Games.

“Zahra Nemati” -Iranian Olympic / Paralympic Games Champion in Archery- is designated as SDGs Enlighter and Ambassador of Global Understanding (UN-Backed Initiatives).

Nemati is the first Iranian athlete, the first Asian woman and 13rd athlete in the history of Sport who has gained 2 simultaneous Olympic and Paralympic quotas. She is the first disabled Muslim woman who carried the Flag for Team Iran in Olympic Games.

In May 2018, president of Global Understanding (GU) Regional Action Center in Iran, by acclamation, designated Zahra Nemati as the first Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Enlighter and Ambassador.

Global Understanding as a UNESCO Chair Programme works on promoting and implementing Sustainable development strategies through linking the global challenges to the local actions. With the aim of increasing public awareness in the level of both country and the region, this institute has started to promote UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by public figures active in the field of Art or sport as thought leaders in SDGs Enlighter plan.

With regard to Nemati’s background in supporting the full equality of the rights for the persons with disabilities under the law in 2017 general assembly of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and based on UN new agenda on sustainable development goals, she will promote and increase the public awareness in related SD goals including the following ones with a focus on “Creating a better world for the persons with disabilities”

SDG10: reduced Inequalities

SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

SDG17: Partnership for the Goals

In the ceremony dedicated to this, Zahra Nemati declared her satisfaction on her new designation as SDGs Enlighter and said:

“Sport is one of the best ways for empowering the persons with disabilities and helping them overcome isolation from the society. I, as UN SDGs Ambassador, will put all my efforts to find best solutions for their problems, increase the quality of their lives and flourish their talents. I wish all the persons with disabilities in the world receive proper education and job opportunities by the year 2030 giving them the chance to live in safe and well-equipped cities.”
